Please note the following information will have a link attached for further reading down below at the end.
Even though the Railway Series books that were written by both Reverend Wilbert Awdry and his son Christopher Awdry date back to 1945 with "The Three Railway Engines" being published by Wilbert Awdry which set the series of Thomas and Friends in motion, most may not have known the reason behind the stories...... If you do, that great so below is a review for those who don't know may be surprised.
The reason behind the Railway Series books being started in 1945 dates back three years earlier to 1942 when Christopher Awdry was a child in bed. In 1942, at the home of Awdry's family, Reverend Wilbert Awdry's son Christopher Awdry was in bed with a case of the measles and Wilbert needed a way to entertain his son who was laying in bed. That is when Wilbert Awdry started pulling stories out of the air about trains and after a while of telling the stories, Wilbert's wife Margret Awdry convinced him to write the stories.
So fast forward back to 1945, based on the stories Wilbert Awdry told his son led the way to the publication of "The Three Railway Engines" which tells the stories of Gordon,Edward and Henry to kickoff the children's book series called "Railway Series".
Later on in his life, when he worked as a guard for the Talyllyn Railway in 1952, inspired him to write stories that created the Skarloey Railway in the Thomas and Friends Universe.
