Steam Train Posts #53-56: ALCO 2-6-2T, Barclay 0-6-0WT, Hunslet 4-6-0T and Baldwin Class 10-12-D 4-6-0T

 In honor of Veteran Day last Friday 11/11/22, I decided to continue on with the second part of honoring the veterans by taking a look at the narrow gauge trench railway engines. As the last Opinion & Answer focus on the Standard Gauge along with a steam train Post series. So I wanted to share the spotlight with the narrow gauge engines that worked the narrow gauge light railway networks along with doing this steam train posts.

As we continue on our train journey, we arrive at our 53rd stop. With this train trip, we traveled from the  London and North Western Railway and head off to World War 1 front to see four types of Narrow Gauge trench railways locomotives. For our 53rd stop, we see puffing down the trench railway, a British War Department Light Railway's American Locomotive Company 2-6-2T locomotives. 

53. War Department Light Railways ALCO 2-6-2T

  2. Engine: Narrow Gauge Tank Engine

  3. Designer: Great Britain War Department 

  4. Builder:  American Locomotive Company

  5. Built (Year): 1917

    1. American Locomotive Company =>  100 locomotives

    2. Total: 100 locomotive was built

  6. Withdrawn: Unknown 

  7. Number of Wheels: 10 wheels

  8. Configuration: 2-6-2T

  9. Top Speed: Unknown

  10. Preserved: 

    1. Real Life: 1 locomotive 

  11.  Interesting Note

    1. Tramway de Pithwies a' Towy, (French Railway) which operated three of these obviously durable engines until it closed in 1964.

As we continue on our train journey, we arrive at our 54th stop. With this train trip, we  continue our trip around the World War 1 front as we continue to examine the four types of Narrow Gauge trench railways locomotives. For our 54th stop, we see puffing down the trench railway, a British War Department Light Railway's Barclay 0-6-0WT.

  11.  Interesting Note

    1. They were built to the same spec as the Hudson 0-6-0WTs

    2. The “WT” on the end of 0-6-0WT stands for Well Tank Engines

    3. These 25 locomotives had to complete the order that Hudson couldn’t fill

For our 55th stop, we see puffing down the trench railway, a British War Department Light Railway's Baldwin Class 10-12-D 4-6-0T.

    1. Real Life: 5 locomotives

    1. *486 locomotives saw action while 9 were lost in sea

    2. Balwin Class 10-12-D with a wheel configuration of 4-6-T 

    3. No. 778 and No. 794 are two of the 5 locomotives that are known to be persevered 

      1. Current owner of #778 is Leighton Buzzard Light Railway

      2. Current owner of #794 is Welsh Highland Railway

For our 56th stop, we see puffing down the trench railway, a British War Department Light Railway's Hunslet 4-6-0T

      1. March 1916 => 45 Locomotives

      2. August 1916 => 30 Locomotives (follow-up order)

      3. January 1918 => 80 more Locomotives orders 

    2. Total: 155 locomotive was built

  6. Withdrawn: Unknown

  11.  Interesting Note

    1. Between August 1916 & January 1918, a total of 110 additional Hunslet 4-6-0T locomotives were added to the original 45 locomotives on the front line.  

    2. Unfortunately only 16 made it to Italy and 2 to Egypt. The others were delivered to the WD and then were disposed.
