Happy Holiday 2022-Conductor Wolf   Happy Holidays to all Its Conductor Wolf, Author of Steam History Blog. Wishing everyone a happy holidays and for those who do, Merry Christmas to those who celebrate the holiday. As we wind down the 2022, I just wanted to take a moment to wish everyone a happy holiday today.   Fun fact for those who live in United States:  North American Aerospace Defense Command-NORAD NORAD’s holiday tradition began in 1955 after a kid mistakenly called a Colorado military command asking to speak to Santa. More calls came in so the commander on duty assigned an officer to answer the Santa calls, and the tradition took hold. Please note the following belongs to me as this is a holiday theme poem I made:   12 days leading up to Christmas 12 days out from Christmas, I put up the Christmas tree  11 days out from Christmas,I decorated the tree with Christmas ordinates  10 days out from Christmas, I decorated the room with Christmas ligh...

Shine a light on some Feline Christmas Folklore & Stories

Image
Happy Saturday,  My name is Conductor Wolf, and on today's edition we shine a light on some feline Christmas folktale & Christmas Stories as it is Christmas Eve.  So let's get on wit the edition but first a quick note down below: note: I'm only going to do a summary as there will be a link to read the entire article for the folklore section while only naming the titles for the Christmas stories. So on with the post! Christmas Folklore: Iceland Iceland's Terrifying Christmas Yule Cat is like many other folklore where their origins lie in distant, interwoven timelines.  Through  the ancient tales of troll cats and familiars, the Icelandic Yule Cat as we all/might know him/her today  had arrived in 1932 through the medium of print. JΓ³lin koma, meaning ‘Christmas is Coming’, by poet, author and erstwhile politician, JΓ³hannes ΓΊr KΓΆtlum, includes a poem entitled JΓ³lakΓΆtturinn, or The Christmas Cat.  Every year since the folklore had...

Happy Wednesday: Today I got an interesting story to share about a thanksgiving Cat

Image
Happy Wednesday everyone.   Please note: This doesn't have anything pertaining to railroad but wanted to share as this is the month of December which is the month of cat from what I researched anyway about December and cats.  I just found this article about a very interesting cat who had an interesting thanksgiving occurring to the article's publication. The cat known as "Smells" had an interesting trip from New York state to Florida.    According to the article, "Air travel around the holidays can be stressful, just ask Smells." which I would agree after an interesting trip Smells had after being trapped in a check in bag. Well it shows one fact that we can all agree on, Air travel is certainly stressful during the holiday times as we've seen by Smells. Luckily Smells is doing ok according to the article.   To read the article, click the link below:   Feline Feast: Cat Found at JFK Gets Holiday Meal After Jumping in Checked Bag-NBC CT article

Railroad Maintenance Cat Spotlight-Dirt The Nevada East Ely Railway Maintenance Cats

Image
Dirt the Nevada East Ely Railway Maintenance Cat   Hi All,  Happy Monday, to start off the week I wanted to spotlight Dirt who works at the East Ely Railway Maintenance Cat. I'll give brief points about Dirt with a link to the source down below.   He was born there 13-years ago to a stray cat that wandered in. His mom had her kittens under one of our trains, and a 1907 built rotary snowplow to be exact. After his mom and the other kittens left, this one beautiful cat was all alone but scared to come out. Took a can of tuna to bring out the little kitten and was able to warm up to the crews.  From the article: "The adorable cat loved rolling around on the dirt floors of the engine house and climb all over the coal pines on our steam-powered train, so the crews named him Dirt. The name stuck as did the coal: “The cat’s fur pattern is actually white and orange, but because at a young age he started rolling in the dirt and climbing on the trains, his white fur gets ...

Image
Gizmo Hi, All I originally planned to end the station cat mini series yesterday but after some thinking, I decided to extend the series two more days. The reason is on the grounds of not ending a series on a Thursday when there is 7 days in a week and wanted to end the series on a Saturday instead of Thursday as a way to start off the weekend on a positive note. So today's station cat mini series bonus #1 is on Gizmo at the Bluebell Railway in Sussex, England.   So on today's special trip we take a trip from Virginia, United State and travel across the Atlantic ocean to Sussex,England to visit the Bluebell Railway to see Gizmo who has an interesting story with the Sussex train station.  Please note: I'll briefly discuss the story as you can read the full content on the website linked below under "Links" to enjoy and support.   Gizmo (picture to the left and above) is a cat with a possible unique story to get a spotlight in my series.
