Steam Train Posts #66-70:Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Locomotive Classes 25,23,21 & 5

Good Saturday Afternoon everyone. It's Conductor Wolf letting you know it's time for another edition of Steam Train Posts #66-70 for Saturday February 4th. On this edition of Steam Train Posts, we get to leave the London,Brighton & South Coast Railway and head for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway to see their class 25,class 23,Class 21 and Class 5 locomotives that were on their railway. 


To start off this post, we will be starting with the Class 25 locomotives and then to class 23 then class 21 and finally ending with the class 5 locomotives. 


 

L&YR Class 25 Locomotive

10.L&YR Class 25 Details

  1. Railroad/Basic: L&YR {Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway}

  2. Engine: Tender Engine 

  3. Designer: William Barton Wright

  4. Builder: Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway

  5. Built (Year): 1887-1901 => 820 locomotives

    1. Total: 280 locomotives

  6. Withdrawn: 1930-1948 =>818 real locomotive

  7. Number of Wheels: 12 wheels

  8. Configuration: 0-6-0

  9. Preserved: 2 real locomotives 

    1. Preserved 

      1. 1 L&YR Class 25

      2. 1 L&YR Class 25 converted to Class 23

    2. Notes 

      1. 230 L&YR Class 25 converted to Class 23 as Saddle Tank Engines by John Aspinall 

      2. Passed briefly to the London and North Western Railway (LNWR) in 1922 and then to the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) in 1923. The LMS gave them the power classification 2F. In 1948, the surviving locomotives (23) passed to British Railways (BR), which numbered them 52016-52064 (with gaps)

11.L&YR Class 23 Details

  2. Engine: Saddle Tank Engine

  3. Designer: John Aspinall

  4. Builder: Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway

  5. Built (Year): 1891-1900 => 230 locomotives

    1. Total: 230 locomotives

  6. Withdrawn: 1926-1964 =>229  real locomotive

  7. Number of Wheels: 6 wheels

  8. Configuration: 0-6-0st 

  9. Preserved: 1 real locomotive

    1. Notes

      1. The class was long-lived, with the first engine being withdrawn in 1926 by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway and the last surviving in use until 1964 with British Railways London Midland Region. 101 were in service at Nationalisation, 20 still in service in 1961.

      2. Part of the Class 25 construction order where 230 of Class 25 were converted to Class 23

12. L&YR Class 21 Details

  1. Railroad/Basic: L&YR {Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway}

  2. Engine: Saddle Tank Engine

  3. Designer: John Aspinall

  4. Builder(s): Vulcan Foundry & Horwich Works

  5. Built (Year): 1888 & 1891-1910 => 60 locomotives

    1. Vulcan Foundry => 3 Locomotives

    2. Horwich Works => 57 Locomotives

    3. Total: 60 locomotives

  6. Withdrawn: 1910, 1924-1938, 1956–1964=> 58 real locomotive

  7. Number of Wheels: 6 wheels

  8. Configuration: 0-4-0st 

  9. Preserved: 2 real locomotives

      1. They were nicknamed Pugs

      2. Made for shunting duties

13. L&YR Class 5 Details

  1. Railroad/Basic: L&YR {Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway}

  2. Engine: Tank Engine

  3. Designer: J. A. F. Aspinall

  4. Builder: Horwich Works

  5. Built (Year): 1889-1911 => 310 locomotives

    1. Horwich Works => 310 Locomotives

    2. Total: 310 locomotives

  6. Withdrawn: 1927-1961=> 309 real locomotive

  7. Number of Wheels: 6 wheels

  8. Configuration: 0-4-0st 

  9. Preserved:  1 real locomotive
